a few years ago i read the secret history by mr. black and was impressed with his take, despite his disregard for magick a term he seemed to avoid his work was based around mysticism while it touched upon magick without acknowledging it. 
his new book is equally as good, and i'm really enjoying reading it, recommending it to as many people as possible, especially those who place science as their religion.
